Functional Benefits of Psyllium Fiber Supplementation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Commonly called Psyllium (Ispaghula Psyllium, Plantago ispaghula and Plantago ovata), has a long history of use as a dietary fiber supplement, primarily as a gentle bulk-forming laxative to promote the regulation of large bowel function, but it has as well a potential role in the treatment and prevention of bowel diseases such as diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease, and could even play a protective role in the prevention of colon cancer. During the last decade, dietary supplementation with Psyllium has been shown to lower blood cholesterol level (especially LDL cholesterol) and to maintain blood glucose homeostasis, which together are the most effective preventive measures against diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Much interest is being shown by the general public, the scientific community, and federal US regulators in the medical application of foods with specific health benefits (functional foods), foods that favorably modify physiologic function. There is also considerable interest in health claims by the industry to produce functional foods and to ensure efficacy of action. The intent of this review is to summarize the functional benefits of Psyllium fiber consumption and to explore the potential application this fiber has for first-line dietary prevention of these diseases and disorders.

Dietary fiber in irritable bowel syndrome (Review)
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common chronic gastrointestinal disorder. It is widely believed that IBS is caused by a deficient intake of dietary fiber, and most physicians recommend that patients with IBS increase their intake of dietary fiber in order to relieve their symptoms. However, different types of dietary fiber exhibit marked differences in physical and chemical properties, and ...
متن کاملSerum lipid responses to psyllium fiber: differences between pre- and post-menopausal, hypercholesterolemic women
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women and men. Psyllium, a soluble fiber has been known to reduce serum lipids. In this pilot study, we evaluated whether menopausal status would affect the serum lipid responses to psyllium fiber in women. METHODS Eleven post-menopausal and eight pre-menopausal women with serum total cholesterol >200 mg/dL were included in th...

متن کاملEffect of four-day psyllium supplementation on bowel preparation for colonoscopy:A prospective double blind randomized trial [ISRCTN76623768]
BACKGROUND Patients with new onset constipation or presumed hemorrhoid bleeding frequently require the use of both fiber supplements and diagnostic colonoscopy. We sought to determine whether preliminary fiber supplementation would alter the tolerability or efficacy of a standard bowel preparation for colonoscopy METHODS A prospective, double blind, randomized trial was designed to compare a ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Soluble Fiber Supplementation on Metabolic Syndrome Profile among Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Patients
Diets with high fiber content improve most metabolic syndrome (MetS) profile in non-diabetic individuals, but there is scarce information about the role of fiber intake in patients with the MetS and diabetes. The objective of this study is to determine whether soluble fiber supplementation improve MetS profile for 8 weeks of intervention in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2D) adult patients. ...
